Rescue MRT climbing procedure ( continued ):
5 . Install , load test and secure the MRT system above a higher
anchor .
Install and load test a second attachment point . This may be either a second ( mirror ) system of the first MRT system , or the use of a lanyard around the trunk of the tree .
6 . Detach from both ascent lines and begin ascent of the MRT
system ( s ).
In the image , the climber is using their lanyard around the trunk to brace themselves , making the MRT ascent physically easier . This is known as trunk walking .
The two ascent lines should be left in position to allow a second rescuer to quickly access the tree if assistance is needed .
7 . Reach the top of the MRT system .
Attach and load test an additional system ( second lanyard or additional MRT system ) to secure a safe working position .
Detach the MRT system and begin rope throwing to the next anchor point ( if required ) or use a second system to begin rope throwing .
8 . Repeat steps 5 to 7 until either the casualty is reached , or the desired
top anchor point is reached .
Key notes :
• 2 continuous points of contact is the preferred method of movement .
• 2 lanyards may be required to ensure 2 continuous points of contact whilst managing transitions over limbs and through the canopy .
