In some circumstances it may not be possible to redirect the casualty vertically downward from the branch where they are situated . Possible examples include :
• Branch is not suitable for redirect .
• Hazards or obstacles below the branch in the exit path .
The rescuer can lower the casualty back in to the main trunk under their top anchor . Options for this lateral belay include a set of fours , or a short lanyard , or the tail of one of the two rescue lines . Whichever is used , the rescuer must ensure that sufficient rope length is available to belay the casualty to the trunk . Running out of rope with the casualty suspended in mid-air between the branch and trunk could be challenging to recover .
