This manual is not intended to be read coverto-cover .
The first part of the manual ( Section 1 : Tree rescue manual ) describes a tree rescue process in roughly chronological order . At each step , the systems or techniques required are mentioned , but not discussed in detail . This structure makes for easier reading without extended digressions to explain complex techniques .
In the second part of the manual ( Section 2 : Skills compendium ) each technique is explained in detail . This section is intended to be used as reference material when training or practising tree rescue skills .
The manual is arranged in the following sequence :

Covers the process of a tree rescue in sequential order , including
dispatch , size-up , risk assessment and planning .

Briefly describes the various rescue techniques that could be used individually or in combination with other techniques to undertake a tree rescue .

2.1 Rescue with aerial rescue appliance
2.2 General tree climbing techniques
2.3 Evaluating tree anchors
2.4 Specialist rescue techniques
2.5 Tree hazard control measures
Discusses specific considerations for the use of rescue booms , ladders , EWPs or cranes to perform a tree rescue .
Introduces the tree access and climbing techniques that will be required to effect a tree rescue without access for rescue plant .
Provides techniques for evaluating the forces applied by different rescue systems , as well as the underpinning knowledge of tree structure required to assess the strength of anchor points .
Also contains an alphabetical list of common tree hazards .
Covers specialist techniques for dealing with complex situations such as suspended loads or lines under tension .
Provides some basic tree hazard control measures for use when tree structure is compromised or where trees have partially failed .

Describes the skill set and equipment that will be required of rescue professionals responding to tree rescues . Provides a suggested training plan and refresher assessment tools .
