Transitioning between climbing systems
The process of changing from one climbing system to another is known as transitioning between climbing systems .
Climbers should always follow the same four steps when connecting to a new climbing system or point of attachment : install – inspect – load test – climb .
Install Begin by installing the new system .
You may need to use rope throwing techniques to install the system at a higher anchor point .
In the case of a climbing rope using MRT as shown on the left , install the rope over the anchor point and connect it back to the climber .
Inspect Visually inspect every element of the climbing system , ensuring that :
• all slack has been taken up .
• anchor points are sound , rope is correctly installed at union or false crotch , anchor point is isolated where necessary .
• all karabiners and other connectors are correctly aligned , not cross-loaded .
• all karabiners and other connectors are connected correctly , fully closed and locked .
Load Test
Apply full body weight to the system as a load test before using the system for life support .
This ensures that any unexpected flaws in the system - such as the anchor point being insecure , friction hitch or device slipping , or karabiners mistakenly attached - will be identified before the system is used as the sole means for life support .
Climb
If moving from a primary climbing system to a secondary system , only after completing all steps above , detach the primary system and begin ascending on the new system .
