2.1 Tree rescue with aerial appliance
This section of the manual contains a compendium of the skills required to perform the various rescue types described in section 1 .
This section is not designed to be read sequentially ; rather it is intended to be referenced as a resource to support or train the processes previously described .

2.1 Tree rescue with aerial appliance

Rescue performed by an EWP or other aerial rescue appliance can be high pressure . Operators are forced to correctly set up the machine and conduct a safe rescue in an efficient time frame .
Operating a tower within a tree is difficult . The usual rescue procedure of accessing windows or casualties from above may prove difficult . The tree ’ s branch structure may inhibit the knuckle and platform from entering the tree space . It is critical to be aware of the dangers of injured and panicked persons jumping onto the platform , which when combined with the risks of falling debris may make the situation worse .
• Take your time , access through the best possible method to the site . Don ’ t take short cuts on the set up and ensure that the machine is working within its limits .
• Access to dense canopy trees may require some “ cut and hold ” limbing to remove hazards for the basket . ( Please see following page for a description of these techniques ).
Some basic EWP response protocols :
Elevate the booms / cage in an “ up and over ” manner , where cage movement to the person ( s ) is from above
• DO NOT APPROACH FROM DIRECTLY BENEATH . This minimises the likelihood of panicking casualties lunging at the cage and potentially placing it in a dangerous overloaded state .
• Establish visual and verbal contact with casualties on your approach to offer reassurance and reduce levels of distress .
• Conduct rescue of casualties in order of highest priority of risk
• Lower and position the cage platform so casualties can step onto the ledge and enter the cage .
• Assist and securely hold a casualty gaining access into the cage and secure prior to detachment from their climbing system
If required to assist ambulance to transport a non-ambulant casualty from an elevated position the casualty must be positioned in a stretcher and strapped to the cage platform using the platform securing straps .
NOTE :
Ambulance officers accompanying the casualty in the EWP basket MUST be provided with a safety harness and helmet .
