Crane access
Where the tree crew were using a crane to conduct dismantling prior to the accident , the crane will be set up on site and will usually be of sufficient capacity to sustain a rescue load at the working radius of the tree .
If the climber is not currently attached to the crane , it should be considered as a potential rescue tool .
The crane operator should be able to confirm the capacity of the crane at the working radius of the tree . This capacity must exceed 20kN ( 2000kg ) to proceed with this operation . The crane hook can be used as a top anchor for a butt block style rescue , for an individual pickoff , or the rescuer can ‘ ride the hook ’.
Note that these techniques are restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions . In Australia , only the state of Victoria explicitly prohibits the use of the crane access method .
