Safety briefing
A SMEACQ briefing is a systematic method of delivering complex information in a short time frame to a team or crew .
In a technical rescue incident , due to the potential high risk and task complexity , the team leader should provide a short briefing using SMEACQ prior to deployment .
S Situation Give a short overview of what has occurred so far .

Command and communication
Discuss safety issues , transport , sustenance , personal equipment needs .
Identify chains of command , delegation of roles , radio frequencies , comms alternatives .
Note : Fire Rescue Victoria High Angle Rescue Team use primary , secondary and alternative methods of comms .
Q Questions Questions on the briefing .
SMEACQ briefings can be adapted as needed depending on the information needs of the rescue team .
For a small , experienced vertical rescue team conducting a comparatively simple rescue , a SMEACQ briefing can be condensed to quickly provide just the key information for each point .
For a larger or more complex rescue , potentially involving a larger team of less experienced rescuers , the SMEACQ briefing should be “ slowed down ”. Rushing the briefing will result in team members who do not understand the situation and will be inefficient at performing their designated roles . At worst , key information may be lost and rescuers may be put at risk during the operation .
