An approved Code of Practice is a legally admissible document which helps businesses interpret their duties under the WHS Act .
Competency is the consistent ability to perform particular tasks and duties to the standard of performance expected in the workplace .
An internal stress in timber where the wood is being ‘ pushed together ’ under load . Contrast with tension .
The manner in which a component is connected to other parts of the rigging system or the manner in which it is used or loaded .
In speed-lining or other floating anchors , the line used to control the descent of the load on the speed-line and to retrieve the pulley or traveller assembly .
Control measures are processes , equipment or work alterations that eliminate or mitigate the risk of harm .
Crown The branching structure of the tree . Cycles to failure
The number of times a rope or other piece of equipment can be used with a given load before it fails .
Deadwood Dead branches and stems in a tree . Decay
The progressive decomposition of wood caused by pathogens and / or fungi , which consume it as a food source .
Delamination Longitudinal separation of wood fibres , causing a split , crack or barber ’ s chair . Design factor
The factor by which the rated or minimum breaking strength of the rope is divided in determining its working load limit .
Displacement The vector form of distance involving direction as well as magnitude . Double-bagging technique
Drift line
Method of isolating a throwline over one union by attaching a second throwline to the end of the first and pulling it up until the joined lines drop down in the desired location .
A variation on the load-transfer technique in which the load is transferred to a second line and moved to another point , often to a second tree .
Dynamic loading Forces created by a moving load , the force of which changes with time and motion . Elastic energy
Elongation , or elastic elongation
Kinetic energy , which is temporarily stored in a body or a system and is conserved as elastic potential energy .
The proportion of its length that a part of cordage will extend under a given load .
EN
European standard . See Australian / New Zealand and International Standards .
Energy
The potential to do work .
Epicormic shoots
Shoots arising from dormant buds in a tree ’ s main stem or framework branches .
EWP
Elevated work platform .
Exclusion zone
An area around a work site which members of the public are prevented from entering .
False crotch
A pulley or other device set in a tree to support a climbing or rigging line .
Fixed loop
Webbing or rope sling that consists of a complete , closed loop .
Floating anchor
Anchor point in a rigging system that is held in position by a separate anchor line or lines and is not attached directly to the tree .
Force The action of one object on another . Friction
A specific type of force that resists the relative motion between two objects in contact ; the direction is always opposite the motion .
Friction device A device used to take wraps in a load line ; provides friction for controlled lowering . GPS
Guy line or guy rope
Global Positioning System – an electronic locating device used when outside phone signal in remote areas .
A static or pre-tensioned line , usually in the opposite direction to the natural lean , which prevents the tree from falling sideways during felling or access .
Guying The use of static or pre-tensioned lines to support a tree whilst it is being accessed or felled . Hanger A broken-off branch or limb that has remained suspended in a tree .
