The ideal anchor for a single guy would be positioned directly behind the inclination of the leaning tree . The image below shows how as the anchor moves away from this ideal position , the effective support provided to the tree decreases .
At up to approximately 30 ° off the plane of lean guys will still provide good support . Beyond
this point the ratio of the force exerted on the guy to the actual moment applied to the tree will begin to rapidly deteriorate . This ratio follows a cosine curve and has been plotted on the graph shown below .
Rescuers should aim to establish guy anchors at an absolute maximum of 30 ° from the plane of lean .
