Safe Approach Distance , Near and Vicinity
It is important to be able to quickly describe various distances from a conductor . The Victorian VESI Green Book contains the following descriptions of different distances around a conductor :
The single constant safety requirement when working in the vicinity of conductors is keeping a safe distance away . The minimum distance workers must stay from the conductors is described as the Safe Approach Distance ( SAD ). This will vary depending on the current that the conductor is carrying : higher currents require a larger SAD .
This manual does not provide critical underpinning knowledge in recognition and understanding of electrical systems and is not a substitute for specialist training .
Each state and many different distribution authorities have different regulations governing how close workers or tree parts can get to energised conductors during work . Specific training will always be required – with training and approval from the network authority , vegetation management workers become authorised persons , and are allowed to work in closer vicinity to electrical assets .
