Thigmomorphogenesis
In addition to the static load caused by the weight of foliage and supporting structure , trees must also tolerate the dynamic forces ( both linear and rotational ) that result from wind loading and other mechanical loads such as heavy snow or ice .
Thigmomorphogenesis describes the reaction of the tree to mechanical stress . Trees use adaptive growth ( secondary thickening of the trunk and branches ) to reinforce their trunks , branches and roots to resist mechanical failure .
Trees react ( acclimate ) to their environment continually , although many trees become less able to rapidly adapt as they mature or decline in health .
