Branch walking with spurs
Branch walking , and moving through the structure of the tree in general , is significantly easier whilst wearing climbing spurs .
To move out along a limb or branch whilst spurring , it may help to walk along the side of the branch instead of on top ( as depicted below ). Lean away from the tie-in-point on the opposite side of the branch to the tie-in-point . This will make it easier to balance , as the climbing rope will offer better support and the climbing spurs will bite more easily .
If a lanyard is passed around the limb and advanced as the climber progresses , the climber ’ s position will be stable and secure . The climbing line , lanyard and spurs allow the climber to ‘ triangulate ’ their contact points so that they are stabilised in each axis and their hands are free to work .
‘ Slam factor ’ is managed by maintaining a connection between the climber and the limb they are moving along , by keeping the lanyard continuously attached around the branch .
