Consult the manufacturer ’ s user guide for instructions on correct sharpening of gaffs . The generic sharpening information provided below may not be appropriate for every climbing spur type or gaff profile .
Many manufacturers recommend the use of a gaff guide or gaff gauge to help achieve the correct angle . Always follow the sharpening instructions provided by the manufacturer .
Lock spurs in vice in order to sharpen accurately . Use wood blocks to protect the shank of the spur from the vice . Use a flat file for sharpening , never a grinding wheel , which may heat and anneal or temper the gaff .
Sharpen the underside of the gaff , following the normal profile of the gaff tip . Sharpening in this manner maintains the edges and profile of the tip . If a sharper gaff is preferred , some manufacturers recommend the use of a honing stone .
If necessary , lightly dress the top side of the gaff to remove burrs and maintain shape . Never file the top side or file back the central ridge ; doing so will re-profile the tip , which may result in spurs which will not bite into timber .
Always re-check spur sharpness and efficacy before use . Use the spur sharpness test described above to confirm that gaffs have been sharpened correctly and are suitable for climbing .
